Red has been planning for this day for a long time. His mind has been like this since he was young. Possibilities and results seem to align themselves and when he was young he was the one the fellas came to whenever they had a problem or wanted to see if a caper could work.
The men walk for about two miles before they come to a stand of deep trees in the forest. They walk to the trees and in the center of them there stands Dead Meat and he has 5 horses. This meeting has happened 10 times over the past two weeks for ten different groups of men. The men change into civilian clothes and Red puts on a large hat and takes a beard from his bag and puts it on his face. He stands and looks around at the men with him and is satisfied by their appearance as well.
Dead Meat come over to where he is and says "Red you know that this is it don't you. This is where you show them you really mean business. All your roads have led to this point, this crucial juncture"
Red thinks back to the speech that he gave in the city and remembers the people faces as he talked, the way that the children had looked at him and he looks at Dead Meat "Dead Meat I know that the people gotta be free. Its time that humanity reached its true potential and I know that this thing, this fucked up system ain't did shit for us. You know I appreciate the things that you have done for me Brother and I know that you will continue the fight no matter what. Al hamdu allah my brother and fellow traveler.
The men look at each other and embrace as muslims do. They part and look at each other and there is admiration in both men's eyes. They walk back to where the other men are and Red and the men mount up and turn to ride away, there are no goodbyes and when Red looks back Dead meat is gone.
The men ride all day and along the way Red lets his mind flow over the situation as it stands. He knows that the government has almost no means of communicating and have had to resort to older methods which the troops are not trained for. He also knows that a lot of soldiers are conflicted and are leaving the military at a rate which has caused the military to order that defectors be shot on sight. He also knows that he has a five day window to do what must be done.
These 50 men have been trained for rapid deployment and Red did this secretly. Not even The Spook or Flenardo knew about this and it had to be that way. None of the men who are on this mission know the whole of it. They have been infiltrating society on this side and working to fit in those were their orders. Yet yesterday a new order went out and they have all begun to move towards a central point. Each squad of men has a different strength and Red knows that they will need all their training for this mission to succeed.
As the men ride they are silent and every once in a while one of them rides ahead to check out a ridge or fork in the road. Red knows that the horse has become a preferred method of travel again. Yet 5 armed black men on horses is another thing entirely. They have a lot of ground to cover and the only time that they stop is to allow the horses to rest and drink or feed. They eat while the horses eat and they cover a good deal of ground the first day and arrive at the farm where they will stay the night. One of the brothers rides ahead to make contact and they wait for his return. Soon they see him riding back and he stops and gives the signal and they ride to him. "Sir the situation is normal" the man says and Red acknowledges him and they follow him in. The family that owns this land has owned it since slavery's end and proud of it. They are led to the barn and are introduced to the man who is the great great great grandson of the first man to own this land. He is named Horace Jolly and he is rather proud of his heritage he walks and as he walks young men come from various places and walk with them. He introduces them. They are all his nephews and grandsons and there are about 40 of them. Red can see the pride in these men and it affects him greatly. They are a representation of what he is fighting for. This pride.
The men are lead to the house and they meet his wife and his nieces and daughters. Their children and grandchildren and are allowed to shower and eat. After dinner Horace walks the men around the land and shows them the trees that were planted by his great grandfather, the stream where he caught his first fish. After awhile he stops and turns to the men and speaks to them solemnly "You just don't know how long my family has waited for this day. I am proud that I could do my part in helping you and I hope that you succeed." He looks at each one of them and they can hear the tremble in his voice as he continues. The government has become the beast and we are its food. I want to thank each and every one of you."
The men look at him and at each other as they thank him and their is a proud look on every face yet there is something else and it is humility.
Red knows that he picked these men right.
they are lead back to the farm and are taken to a large building which looks like a steel shed but when it is opened there are beds lined up on the walls.
Horace explains "This is where you men will sleep. It is where all the unmarried men sleep on this farm for now, until this thing is over. Whatever the outcome."
the men are tired from all the riding and by the time the other men come in they are asleep. They have another long day in front of them tomorrow.
