The days pass and the boy grows under the teachings of the man whose name is Melchizedek. He lives in a cave that is not far from a stream.
This is where he and Sampson find themselves on this day and the boy has learned that it is not wise to press to hard in his questions to his teacher.
Melchizedek has told him that he was born in Africa which is where all men originated and he studied something called kung fu in a place called China where the men have slanted eyes. He was stolen and brought to this place and sold to a white man.
He learned to speak the language and how to read and escaped but not before killing the white man, his family and anyone who knew of him and went to live with some Indians who taught him their ways.
Melchizedek is dressed in what he calls his battle uniform and he is painted. He moves with precision as he prepares the things the boy will need this day. They have prepared for this day for over 2 years and Sampson has grown into a strapping young man.
They walk away from the camp and soon they are deep in the forests that lead to the mountains.
They have watched their prey for some time now and this will be the boys first excursion on his own.
They walk for about two hours and Melchizedek turns to him and says "The rest is up to you."
He then turns and walks back the way they came and disappears into the woods.
Sampson watches as he melds into the trees and turns and reaches down and touches his dog who perks up.
He knows something is happening and he is ready as well.
They begin to walk and soon they come to where they need to be and the dog picks up the scent of their prey, he does not bark or bay, he simply lays into the scent and he and the boy begin to trot at a steady pace through the trees.
They run for miles and neither the boy nor the dog seem to tire.
All of a sudden the dog stops and looks around and the boy does as well.
The forest has gone silent and they seem to be the reason when suddenly out of the trees a golden blur erupts and slams into the side of the dog and the dog and the blur growl and snarl as they roll around.
Sampson runs to where they are and the animals break apart and Sampson looks into the slit eyes of his prey.
All he carries is a knife and he already has it in his hand and he and the dog stand side by side as the Mountain lion moves around them.
His fur is raised and he seems to be sizing them up.
He charges at them and Sampson flips off to one side as the dog feints. The lion though is old and wise and he reaches out a paw which rips Sampson's shirt open, yet there is no time to think of that for the lion brings the fight straight to them and it is all both the boy and the dog can do as they dodge and parry with this adversary.
The lin raises dust and it mixes with the dust that they raise as the lion pounces on the dog and Samson sees the claws as they rip into his friends flesh.
He rushes in and stabs the lion in the side but this just enrages him further and almost as quick as the eye can see he is on Samson.
Sampson feels the hot fetid breath of the lion and looks into its cold feral eyes as he strikes with deadly precision and stabs the lion in the throat and twists the knife.
The lion falls on him and he lies there for a moment and a memory flashes of a time when someone else lay on him. A pretty woman.
The dog comes over and tugs at the lion and together he and Sampson get him off of him.
They both look like crap right about now and Sampson thinks of what his mother is going to say when she sees him tonight.
Damn!
He walks to the dog and looks at the gash in his leg and goes over to where he dropped the bag and pulls a jar from it and rubs it into the dogs wounds and that is when he notices he is bleeding himself.
He looks sown and there is a gash in his abdomen which though deep is not lie threatening.
He rubs some of the salve on it and begins the task of skinning the lion.
He and the dog bury the carcass of the lion out of respect and walk away.
As they come to the camp of Melchizedek he walks out to meet them and for the first time since he met the boy he hugs him, looks him in the eyes and says.
"You are boy no more."
