To Red battle has always seemed to be in slow motion. He didnt know if this was a result of all the training that he had received as a young man or if he was born with it. It just happened.
The helicopters come in strafing the area and it is as if hell has been unleashed. Explosions rock the ground and the path of the bullets is clear as the rain from the guns mounted on the helicopters.
Bodies fly through the air as the day becomes a mad prophets vision of hell.
Anti aircraft lasers shoot through the air and one of the helicopters is hit and brought down in a hail of fire and twisted metal.
Red knows that this assault is just another of the governments attempts to gauge his troop strength but there is no way that they can avoid this attack.
He barks orders into his radio and he sees his troops as they hunker down and get busy.
Amid the confusion of battle a calm sets in and the battle commences.
The anti aircraft units begin to set down lines of fire and the infantry units start to rain pain in the form of artillery as the first of the enemy vehicles come into view.
This is going to be a long day.
One thing that he knows is that he must figure out a way to flank the enemy or there is no way that this is going to work.
The government still possess the best instruments of war and they have been pulling out all the stops.
They have troops who are not afraid to die. Robots that do not know the meaning of retreat.
The government has been developing them for years and even though the may not be cyborgs they are just as dangerous...just as deadly.
He looks into the sky and sees the drones and he calls the airfield and tells his pilots to get in the air and engage them.
It looks like armageddon has become the order of the day.
Reds troops move like a well oiled machine as they start to wear at the enemies defenses.
Its amazing that will to be free can be so strong that once started nothing can deter its march.
His planes arrive and begin to engage the enemy in the air while he and his troops engage them on the ground.
He calls for an airstrike on the enemies lines and he is rewarded with the sight of explosions which tear into the enemies ranks.
As he mounts an assault he looks over and sees two soldiers hunkered down behind an overturned vehicle a second before they are gone in a flash of flames and smoke.
His rage seeks to consume him but he knows that now is not the time to give in to his primitive rage. This is modern war.
The battle goes on and on and Red knows that the enemy is using the confusion to send their troops in....to try to get closer.
He has planned for this and he has troops in the shells of the buildings which fill the landscape and he hears them as they talk on the radios and engage the enemy in close combat.
He also hears the sounds of men dying.
This is an all or nothing situation and he knows that the government will stop at nothing to capture him. To parade him in front of his people. He is the symbol for the movement.
He erupts from his place of hiding and runs across the field towards the enemy lines and he sees men as they rise from hiding to fire at him. He sees them falling and he senses rather than sees the men who charge with him.
One thing that Red always has admired are the generals of old who led their troops into battle he feels that this is what truly set them apart from the modern generals who always stayed in the rear and put other men at harm.
He fires the assault rifle that he carries and is rewarded with the sight of an enemy soldier falling as his bullet finds its mark.
His fear chews at his insides as he charges. He knows that any second could be his last but it is to late to turn back now and he sees the vehicle that is in his path swing his gun at him and he starts to weave and doge as it begins to fire at him.
He reaches the point where he is to close for the vehicle to target him and jumps on it and strips a grenade from his vest and plants it against the barrel and jumps down and runs as it explodes and disentegrates the big gun.
Reaches the ammunition and causes an even bigger explosion.
This is where he was born to be he thinks as the symphony of war becomes his soundtrack.
The day presses on towards evening and it is almost dusk before the battle is won by Red and his troops, but at what cost he thinks as he sees the bodies which lie in the setting sun and hears the cries of the dying and injured.
He walks away from the field of battle after all is said and done, after the prisoners are taken away and the medical troops move in and calls headquarters to excuse himself.
Rosemarie comes over the radio and her voice is full of concern as she tells him he needs to come in and get some rest.
That he needs to tald to someone.
He turns off his radio and walks back into the city alone.
