Later Red is back at headquaters when he decides to take a walk and he is leaving the building when he runs into Rosemarie.
"Hey Red."
"Hey Rosemarie."
"Where you going?"
"Just out for a walk. Got some ideas bangin around in my head and I need to clear them up."
"You need some company Red?"
"No... but I did want to ask you how the training is going?"
"It's going great and those guys From the FOI really know their stuff but that cousin of yours is a damn beast. I didnt know that you had christian cousins. I would have thought that you were born islamic."
"There are many things about me that would surprise people if they only knew."
"I guess so Red, you do seem sorta complex."
"Well Rosemarie I gotta go but keep up the good work."
He leaves and Rosemarie stands there looking at him as he walks away with a look that if seen by anyone else would let them immediatly know that she was infatuated with him.
He leaves the building and goes out into the street. It is dusk and the day is fading into the night which is the best time for him to walk. Its harder to be a target when you move at night.
As he walks he thinks back to the stories his dad and his grandad used to tell him when he was younger. The stories of how it was growing up in Georgia...living in the south. He also remembers when he was a boy and he was in the first grade and his teacher was a black woman. He remembered telling her that he could read and he also remembers what she said to him.
"Boy quit your lies...you know you cant read." She placed him in the group with all the other little black children who could'nt read. The other group in the class was all white and they seemed to be having so much fun over there with her when she was teaching them. She would let the intern teach the black kids.
Red went home and told his mother and she told him "Dont worry baby we know that you can read and I bet you will figure out a way to show them. You are my smart little man."
He thinks back to the day that he made his move. The black teacher was out that day and the class was divided into the segregated groups when he stood up and started to move towards the white group of kids and the intern tried to stop him. He walked over to where the sustitute teacher was leading the kids as they read and he grabbed a book from one of the white kids and began to read. He read the book with the same intonation that the teachers did when they read and the white substitute as well as the intern stood there with their mouths open as he orated the story..
The next day he came to school and the black teacher was back. She seemed angry at him for some reason and when the other kids went out to the playground for recess she held him back.
"So you think you are a smart little boy dont you?" she asked as she made him sit down. She pulled a book from the shelf and said " I want you to write everything that is on that page and he began to write the way that his mother had shown him.
The teacher had a ruler in her hand and she hit him on his left hand. "Thats not the hand that you write with. You write with your other hand." She made him put the pencil in his right hand and told him to write he began to try and she hit him with the ruler again. "Is that what you call writing?" She shouted as she made him try to write over and over with his right hand.
This continued day after day for about a week until one day the white intern happened to return to the room. She saw what was going on and Red saw her but the black teacher did"nt.
Red is in the class for about 3 more days until one day the principal appears at the door.He calls the black teacher to the door and she leaves the room. The children are left with the intern but they know not to play or act out of sorts. The black teachers control is that profound.
After a minute she returns and tells Red to get his stuff and go with the principal. He does and as he and the principal are walking down the hallway the pricipal begins to talk to him.
"I heard that you are a special little boy son. I am going to take you somewhere to be with the other special kids and I want to give you something to give to your mother when you get home." He hands Red an envelope and opens the door to a classroom and take Red inside.
This classroom is much better than the one Red was in. There is a fish aquarium and a hamster in a cage. There are pictures of beautiful buildings and animals Red has never seen hanging on the walls.
He just stands there until a white woman who smells like vanilla comes over to him and squats in front of him. She looks him in his eyes and talks to him. "Hi. I have heard so much about you. This is my classroom and this is where you are to come from now on. Red looks at her and says "Yes maam."
When he gets home from school he hands his mother the letter and she opens it and reads it. She places her hand over her mouth and Red is sure that he has done something wrong because there are tears in her eyes. She drops to her knees in front of him and hugs him so hard that he cant breate and then she says. "Do you know what this is?"
Red is lost so he says "no maam."
His mother says to him " You have been placed in the gifted class. Wait till I tell your daddy this."
Red has no idea what gifted means.. He has heard his friends talk about the special class and he thinks that it means that he is dunb so he begins to cry because that is what his mother is doing.
She looks at him and says why are you crying?" He answers "Because I am dumb."
His mother looks at him and says who told you that. He explains what his friends said about the special class and she laughs. Red has always liked to hear his mother laugh but this time it does'nt cheer him up. She looks at him and gets on her knees in front of him as she talks.
"Boy you are in the gifted class. That means that you are very smart. Red you go on outside and play with your sister and your friends until your dad gets home."
When he goes outside all of the kids are in the yard and he goes to where his best friend is and they start to talk about what happened that day.
"Boy I knew you was gonna be in trouble."
"I aint in trouble."
His friend looks at him and says "If I was put in the special class my momma would whup my butt.'
"I aint in no special class."
"Yes you are that what the teacher said when the principal came and got you."
"Well the teacher told a lie."
"I dont believe you."
"Well you just wait and see."
They all play in the yard until his dad pulls up and Red runs to the car to meet him. He talks to his dad for awhile until his mother calls him and his sister in the house and shoos all the other kids home.
When they get in the house look at his dad and says "Did he tell you?"
"Tell me what?"
"Our son has been placed in the gifted class."
"What???"
Red is so scared at this point because he still thinks that he is in trouble.
His dad looks at him and says "Well I think its time for a celebration."
His mom goes to the kitchen and walks out with dinner as they sit at the table and his father explains to him what gifted means.
After dinner they have cake and cookies and Red and his sister are allowed to stay up late.
Red is still lost in his thoughts when he hears a scream from the alley which he is passing. He looks down the ally nd sees three men attacking a woman and he sprints into action.
He pulls the Desert Eagle from its holster and charges down the alley. As he runs up he shoots the first man he sees in the leg and the other two men instantly step back from the woman. Red holds the gun on them as he goes to the woman and picks her up. She is looking down but when she looks up Red finds himself lost in her eyes. In the curls of her hair.
Damn she is beautiful. he thinks even as he commands the men to pick up their partner and he makes them lead the way back to headquaters as he walks with the woman.
She leans on him for support and he finds himself turned on by this even though this is hardly the time or place.
When they reach headquaters he turns the men over to the guards and escorts tohe woman to the medical lab which has been set up in the building.
After he is sure that she is being taken care of he turns to leave and he hears the voice of the woman speak to him.
"Will you come back and check on me?"
All he can say is "Sure."
