Smokey is out in his barn making horseshoes when he hears a sound and walks to the doors of the barn to investigate.
He sees 4 white men on horses and they ride up to where he is and stay seated on their horses.
He waits for them to say something and the one who is on the horse closest to him says "Nice place you got here boy."

The white man looks around before he continues and he says "You done good for yourself nigger."
As soon as the word nigger escapes his mouth Smokey realizes who he is and turns to run back into the barn and get his shot gun but one of the white men has rode around and blocked his way.
Another of the men jumps off his horse and approaches Smokey but the years of working iron has made him hard as stone and he swings and knocks the white man out.
When he turns he feels the lasso wrap around his body and it drws tight and the white man spurs his horse and drag him from his feet.
He hollar's as he falls and the white men yell and laugh as he is dragged on the dirt.
Melinda is in the house and she hears the commotion outside and runs out of the house and into the yard as Smokey is being pulled by the white man on the horse and she just reacts.
She picks up a stone from the ground and throws it at the man who is pulling her husband and it strikes him on his arm and he turns and sees her and yells at the other men to get her.
They jump from their horses and chase her down and bring her to where her husband is lying tied on the ground. She falls on him as if to protect him but the white men pull her away as the first white man to speak and who seems to be giving the orders walks over and kicks Smokey in the side.

You and that painted nigger killed my brother and now you gone pay."
He looks at the young white man with him and says "Go and wake that boy up and bring him over here."
The young white man does as he is told and the two of them walk back. The one who was knocked out is leaning on the other and he is still kind of out of it.
The older white man looks at him and says "Boy this here is one of the niggers that killed yo pappy."
The young man pushes away from the support of the other and walks over to where Smokey is and pulls his pistol from his holster and slaps Smokey with it.
When Smokey wakes he is in the barn and he hears his wife crying.
He is tied down and he hears his wife crying.
He look to the side and he see's her tied naked and spread and he fights the ropes that bind his arm to no avail.
The older white man walks to him and says "Good thang you decided to join us nigger. We got somethin special for you and yo wench here.

They steal anything that they think has value and they load their horse with loot from the house and the barn.
