Red has been on the scene for hours and finally he and the council have gotten the rescue efforts underway. There are teams with dogs and all. The things that the government is doing, Its actions are causing people to see the movement as the only alternative.
People who live in the area are digging through the rubble looking for friends and neighbors as dust clouds the sky.
Red and his people have made sure that everyone is wearing masks.
He is standing and looking at one of the craters in the street which was left by the bombs and it makes him wonder how these people can do this to their own people...in some cases their own family members.
So many times since this began he has been reminded of the nature of his enemy and this is one of those times. He looks over at his friends, Shalonda holds a small childs hand and talks to her, he sees no mother, no father.
Velvety talks to some men who are digging through the rubble as she hands them bottles of water.
Red tries to see the life in all this death and destruction but sometimes it all molds together for him, death and life always have for him...been one that is.
He turns and walks to where Jacquelyn is. Jacquelyn is his daughter and she is also a nurse. He pulls here to the side and asks her how the woman is doing.
"She is alright dad, but we had to sedate her. She lost her eyes and her baby."
At this Jacquelyn turns her head but not before Red sees the tears that well up in her eyes. He feels pride in his daughter but he also feels remorse that she has to witness this.
Yet he feels that the means justify this action...this course.
He hugs his daughter and askes her which hospital the woman was taken to and she tells him.
He talks to her for a while longer and is about to leave when he hears over his radio that a large enemy troop movement has been detected in a sector about 25 miles from the city.
Its about time he thinks as he gets on the radio and start to make sure that his troops are in place.
He calls the field where his pilots are and puts them on the ready. For obvious reasons he is not letting the pilots who defected  fly the planes, too risky.
He jumps in his vehicle and his convoy moves out but before they do he leaves the Spook in charge. He knows that the situation is being left in capable hands.
He is itching for a fight and he knows that this can be a good and a bad thing and he thinks back to when he was young and worked in the Florida sun alongside men much older than himself in the sod fields.
He thinks of the fire ants and the sun. How at times he was almost delirious and in his madness he saw things.
Yet he also thinks of the time one of the older boys tried him and the old men told him that the boy would keep trying him if he didnt stand up for himself. Red was known to be a good fighter but this boy was much bigger than him and to tell the truth Red didnt know if he could handle him. One of the older guys told him "fuck that shit boy. Next time he tries you just punch his ass right between the eyes." Later that day the boy walked up to Red and punched him in the back of the head. Red was surprised. This was all he had? He turned round and punched the boy right between the eyes and the boy looks kind of dazed before he jumps back and squares off. They fight in the sun and grunt as punches land as the day sings in its glory.
The other guys continue to work and look at them fighting. They do nothing to stop the fight.
Red and the other boy fight so long that they grow tired and just lean on each other as they swing.
When they are finished and stand there breathing hard with swollen eyes and scrapes and bruises the man on the truck says "If y'all are finished playing we got work to do here."
Red has to fight the boy again but he has gained the respect of the men and they take him under their wing and teach him many things in the 5 summers before he goes to the army.
When he joined the army he used the teachings of the Panthers and The Nation as well as the things he learned from all the denizens of the ghetto to guide him and he had a very decent military experiance. Yet as he thinks back even this has led to where he is right now. Damn!
They reach they edge of the city and start to get ready for an attack.
They do not have to wait long.
The first thing that they see are the black helicopters flying fast and low.
